When he was 12f 12, his school team won the Taber Shield (a knockout competition for primary schools in New South Wales). Gilchrist was the captain, wicketkeeper and opening batsman of the team. Then as their family moved to Lismore, Gilchrist was put up in Kadina High school in Lismore. And in 1989 when he captained his school team, he got an opportunity to play for the Richmond Club. And in 1994-95, Gilchrist moved to Western Australia, from where he took over from Tim Zoehrer as the West Australian keeper.

Adam Gilchrist's life as an international cricketer started in 1996, when Adam was called upon to keep for the injured Ian Healy in a One-Day International tri-series tournament for Australia. Gilchrist, like others, expressed surprise at his selection for Australia, as there were others with more experience that the selectors overlooked. He was then marked as Australia's next keeper. And once again in 1997, Gilchrist was called back to keep wickets as Ian Healy was suspended. In the mid 97's Australian selectors were in need of a batsman/wicketkeeper, and Gilchrist got the chance and replaced an Ian Healy amidst much disappointment from the Australian fans.

In the first final of the Carlton and United Series against South Africa, Gilchrist opened the batting with Mark Waugh. He scored 20 runs in that match. He was given second chance to open the batting in the 2nd final. It was in that match that Gilchrist scored a maiden 100 of just 104 balls and led Australia to a 7 wicket victory. On the 5th of November 1999, Gilchrist made his long awaited first appearance in the Australian Test team (following Healy's complete retirement from the sport). He gave Australia, one of its most famous wins - the victory over Pakistan in Hobart in 1999-2000, when he took Australia from the brim of defeat to a historic win. Ever since, he has been an inevitable player of the Australian side with a One day average of 35.83 And a test average of 54.35.
