Inzamam made his ODI international debut against West Indies, 1991 in the 2nd ODI of the three match series and his test debut in 1992 when Pakistan played England in England. A few months after his ODI debut, Sri Lanka toured Pakistan and Inzamam had a wonderful series. He scored his maiden century in Multan in the 4th ODI. He went on to make a century in the next match also. Inzamam was once seen batting in the nets by great Imran Khan.

Imran Khan was so much impressed by his batting that he decided to play Inzamam in all the world cup matches. Inzamam didn't exactly live up to his expectations. His performance throughout the tournament was ordinary, but Imran kept on encouraging him and guided him. It was not until the semifinal of the World Cup that Inzamam proved his potential. Chasing a huge total of 263, Inzamam batted with great confidence He scored a quick 60 of just 37 balls. Pakistan made it into the finals and eventually went on to win the World cup. But his performance after that world was very poor. Though he made some high scores now and then, he was not consistent with his scoring. He was identified as someone who was very careless about his running and leg movement. The next World Cup was a more pathetic one for Inzamam. He only had an average of around 24 in the 6 matches Pakistan played. After the series he was dropped for the first time in his career. One cannot forget the mammoth 329 he made in the first innings of the 1st test against New Zealand.

Pakistan won the match by an innings and 324 runs. It was the 10th highest score by a batsman in a test innings at that time. He also became the 2nd only Pakistani to cross the 300 run barrier in a test innings. Inzamam had been a player who was never tried hard to bring out the best in him. As Imran always tells about Inzamam, he could always have been much better. But now as the captain of the Pakistan team he is developing into a more mature player.
