Brian Lara's cricket life started even as a kid, when he used to play cricket in the streets with a coconut branch. As any other boy in the Caribbean his love for cricket was no wonder. At the age of 15, he played for the West Indies under-19 team and at the age of 19, he captained the West Indies under-23 team. And in 1989 Lara led West Indies in the Youth World Cup. Brian Lara made his international debut in 1990 against Pakistan. Again it was against Pakistan he made his maiden ODI century, in 1993. One of his memorable innings came in 1994, when he made his unbeaten 375 against England in the 5 match test series. West Indies went on to win the series 3-1. It was the then highest score in test innings by any cricketer. His highest score in ODIs came in 1995 against Sri Lanka when he scored 169. He captained West Indies from 1997 to 1999. After a poor performance in the Series against New Zealand he lost his captaincy. It took him 4 more years to regain his captaincy.

It was only in 2003 he captained West Indies again, when Australia toured West Indies for a 4 match test and 7 match One day series. Though Lara had a good test series with 533 runs to his credit, West Indies lost the series 3-1. It was in 2004 that Brian Lara, the West Indies captain, reclaimed the highest score from Mathew Hayden in test cricket history and became the first batsman to make 400 test runs against England on the third day of the fourth cricket test Monday. It is an irony that though Lara had many times performed extremely well and yet was unable to win matches for West Indies. Yet Lara is one of the best cricketers West Indies has ever produced with 25 test centuries and a brilliant average of 42.66 and 53.35 in ODIs and tests respectively.
