Dravid started playing cricket when he was 10. Dravid did his schooling and college from St.Joseph's. He got selected for the under 15, 17 and 19 teams as a student of St Joesph's and performed consistently at all levels. In 1991 he made his first class debut in the Ranji Trophy match against Maharashtra scoring a wonderful 82 even though he came in to bat at number seven.
His first century came in the next match against West Bengal where he scored 134, at number six. He made into the international scene in 1995-96. He made his debut in One Day Internationals against Sri Lanka at Singapore in 1996. Though he failed to perform in his debut One day series, it was his test debut against England that gave him a permanent berth in the Indian Cricket team.
It was during the 1999 World cup that he proved his full potential. Dravid was the highest scorer in the 1999 World Cup, when he along with Sourav Ganguly created a new World record for the highest partnership of 318 runs for any wicket. It was for his splendid performance in the 1999 World Cup that he was named as one of the Wisden's 5 Cricketers of the year in 2000. Dravid has also been awarded with the prestigious Arjuna Award by the President of India.
In 2002, Ponting became the ODI captain for Australia and led the team to win the World Cup in 2003.
