Ricky Ponting made his ODI debut in 1994/95 against South Africa in NewZealand and his test debut against Sri Lanka in 1995/96. Though he made 96 in his test debut, he could not find a permanent place in the test squad after a few poor performances. Earlier in his career Ponting was a regular member in the One day International squad because of his excellent scoring at No 3 position, and his brilliant fielding in the Point area. Inspite of his success in the shorter form of the game, he couldn't find a place in the test squad.

Ponting proved his class in the 1996 world cup and then shortly he was recalled for the test team which toured England for The Ashes. Ricky Ponting made use of that opportunity and made his maiden Test hundred in a huge partnership with Matthew Elliott in the fourth Test of the series. After his wonderful performance in the 1999 World Cup in England, Ponting finally established himself in the Test side during the tour of Sri Lanka.

He scored consistently at no 6 position. Following three ducks in the series against Pakistan he made a come back and scored his record 197. He could not play the New Zealand following an ankle injury. After his return to the side following injury, he played well against the West Indies at home but found a horror series against India in India, scoring less than 20 runs in the 3 Test matches. Again his Test career was on doubt, however, he fought back when promoted to number 3 in the Test side and has since made the position his own with consistent scoring. In 2002, Ponting became the ODI captain for Australia and led the team to win the World Cup in 2003.
