Fleming debuted for New Zealand in 1993 at the age of 20 in a one-off Test against India at Trust Bank Park in Hamilton. Batting at number five 5 he scored 16 and 92 and it seemed as if he was onto a long career. A couple of days later he made his first appearance for New Zealand in ODIs against a strong Indian team. Though Fleming was scoring at a moderate rate, it was only in 1996 that he made his maiden century against West Indies. Thereafter he made his maiden test century against England in January 1997. In final test of the same series against England Fleming was made the captain of the side. Fleming's beginnings as captain brought mixed results, he had some successes against England and Zimbabwe, but the team suffered defeat in the hands of Australia the next season before bouncing back to defeat Zimbabwe 2-0 in two tests at home and share a short one-day series with Australia. Fleming scored two one-day centuries during the season, both against Australia, both unbeaten and match-winning. Fleming continued as captain after a serious groin injury. He captained the side in the 1999 world cup.
New Zealand played well, including an unexpected win against Australia, to reach the World Cup semi-finals. Success followed when New Zealand won the 4 test series 2-1 against England in England. It included the first-ever wins at Lord's and the Oval. It was, perhaps, Fleming's greatest victory. Then they went clinch the test series against West Indies when they pushed of a 2-0 victory in the test series.
Fleming's next great achievements came in Australia during the summer of 2001-2002. First he led New Zealand to a close, hard-fought draw in three Tests against Australia, the then world Champions.
And the year 2003 was memorable for Fleming for many reasons. It was in the league match against South Africa, that Fleming went on to make his career best in ODIs, scoring a unbeaten 134 from 132 balls. New Zealand went on to win the match by 9 wickets. That victory gave New Zealand a spot in the super sixes. It was again in 2003 that Fleming made his career best 274* in test matches in the 2nd second test against Sri Lanka.
