His mother has always been very encouraging of her son's cricket and even managed the school cricket team. Fleming was educated at Waltham Primary School and Cashmere High School. Fleming then went on to Christchurch Teacher's College, until cricket took over. He completed two years of his degree, majoring in physical education. From the beginning he performed well in club cricket, competing well beyond his age, as a schoolboy in Christchurch. In 1994, on seeing his performances for youth teams and his first few games for Canterbury, Fleming was selected to play Test Cricket with very little first-class experience to his credit.
