Courtney Walsh is known to the world as the all time greatest bowler and the gentlest of cricketers the world has ever seen. A fighter to the core, Walsh with his gentle smile on the face can prove dangerous on any kind of a pitch. A cricketer with rare temperament for a bowler, Walsh has always played the game in true cricketing fashion. One cannot forget the West Indies-Pakistan World cup match of 1987. Salim Jaffer was on the runner end and he started running even before the ball was delivered. Walsh could have easily had him run out. But for Walsh his ethics of the game was more important than victory. Pakistan won the match that day, yet at the end of the day everyone knew that Cricket and Walsh's true sportsmanship had won.
At the same time when Walsh like most other fast bowlers was not used to sledging on the grounds, he chose to remain cool. But the instance a batsman began stepping out or hitting over the top, Walsh would give him a piercing stare which would clearly leave the message for the batsman.
Walsh had bowled longer than any other bowler in the world. He has such sprit and stamina, that he never seems to get tired. He bowls his first and last overs of the match with the same spirit. Courtney Walsh's bowling speed was not extraordinary, but the accuracy of his line and length were amazing. When this man retired from international cricket, cricket had lost one the all time greatest bowlers and more importantly a gentle cricketer who had always played the game with its true spirit.
