Born on October 30, 1962, in Kingston, to Eric and Joan, Walsh was their only child. Courtney started playing cricket at a very young age as early as seven. While his mother used to be under the impression that Courtney went religiously to the Church on Sunday, Courtney used to spend the Sundays playing cricket with his friends. His mother did not have the slightest idea that her son would choose cricket as his career. She thought he would go for something like being an accountant. His cousin Gerald Wollaston played cricket for Jamaica in the past and apart from that there were no cricketing background in Walsh's family. Walsh started his career as a spin bowler in the schools and then identified his potential as a fast bowler.
Courtney has a son, also called Courtney but known as Junior, and a daughter, Chris. Apart from cricket his hobbies include swimming and reading books.
